Vacation Photos: Grand Island, Michigan

Hello friends! I'm back to the grind after a week off hiking, backpacking, and camping in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. We spent the week on Grand Island, in crystal-clear Lake Superior, among the lovely Pictured Rocks, and amid black bears (though sadly, we didn't catch a glimpse of one). The mister, his sister and her husband and I all strapped on 25-35 pound packs and hiked around the circumference of the island. We spend our days hiking and swimming in the cold waters, and our nights around the campfire eating (actually delicious) dehydrated food. On our last day on the island, we hiked nearly 15 miles! It was surprisingly relaxing to work so hard during the day, and to be so far from every day reality. Here are a few pictures from our trip:

All ready to start our adventure
(in Munising, MI just before taking the ferry over to the island)

Hiking the island. Everything was so green!

We had to filter our own water everyday...
even on the dreary days with huge waves.

Our campsite (second & third night) and our lovely fire.

We had our own personal cliff overlook at our campsite
and we could watch the sun set over the lake & the other cliffs.

In the mornings, we drank instant coffee out of collapsible cups.

Normally, the island looked like this as we hiked around it.

One day, after a night of wind advisories and rain,
the island looked like this.

For two days, we had our own personal beach,
complete with our own personal 8-foot waves.

Always, we had breath-taking views
(but maybe it was just the hilly hiking that took our breath away...)

Lake Superior was rocky, clear and refreshing each time we took our daily dip

And last, but not least, we got to spend a week among one of
my favorite things in the world... birch trees.

Missing the relaxing out-of-doors,
L. Stacks
